5 San Francisco Restaurants Selling Pantry Essentials

As San Francisco’s residents adjust their lifestyles to limit leaving their homes and consolidate trips for essential needs, some of the community’s favorite food spots have added groceries, pantry staples, and even toilet paper to their menus. Call it this year’s greatest two-for-one where we can grab items to restock our homes in addition to purchasing fresh loaves of bread, vegan ice cream, or bottles of wine. Here are five vegan-friendly local businesses offering essentials for delivery or pickup.

Jane the Bakery

Western Addition

While you may not be able to dine at one of their two sister cafes at the moment, Jane the Bakery is still open with an array of enticing bread loaves and pastries, ready for you to take and create your own home cafe experience. Flour from Central Milling, yeast, and their sourdough starter are also available to add to your order. Don’t think you can finish an entire loaf? Half loaves are possible for many menu items, and their breads freeze well. Go ahead and order to your gluten-tolerant heart’s content. We sure have been!

Delivery is available for free within a one mile radius of the bakery if you text them at 415-926-3061 or via DoorDash if you are beyond that radius. While takeout is an option daily from 7am to 3pm, call ahead to reserve some items since many sell out quickly.

20 Spot

Mission

The Mission’s beloved wine bar located in a former record shop is offering not only wine bottles from their collection to pair with your next Zoom happy hour (which just became happier because you won’t have to share a single drop from one of 20 Spot’s bottles, are we right?), but also paper towels, gloves, fresh produce, flour, sugar, dried goods, bread baking kits, house-made pizza dough, and containers of their 19-year-old sourdough starter.

Online pre-order for a scheduled pickup date and time.

The Mill

Alamo Square

Known for being one of the only bakeries in the Bay Area that mills their flour in-house for their breads, The Mill is the ultimate portrayal of many San Franciscan’s diets: one part locally roasted coffee and one part naturally leavened artisan bread. In addition to Four Barrel Coffee beans and bread from Josey Baker Bread, you can buy their freshly milled flour (including whole grain white wheat, whole grain red wheat, rye, and bread), oat milk, sugar, spices, beans, fruit, greens, and other staples to restock your kitchen.

The Mill is open daily from 8am to 2pm for takeout.

Churn Urban Creamery

Portola

The neighborhood ice cream shop occupying Portola’s once-operating Avenue Theater has continued to serve their community by supplying ice cream in pints and quarts (including vegan flavors such as Chai Chocolate Cardamom and Matcha Stracciatella) and essentials like sugar, flour, yeast, rice, vegetables, fruit, dairy alternatives, and everyone’s current favorite: toilet paper. Need something to occupy the ice cream-loving little ones during your next virtual meeting? Pick up one of the Kids Art Supply Kits, too.

Visit their website to pre-order for curbside pickup between 9am to 1pm Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Churn Urban Creamery

Thorough Bread and Pastry

Castro

Known for the newly baked goods that have since captured the heart of the Castro, this cute bakery is also selling supplies for your next grand baking endeavour, including flour (bread, whole wheat, and rye), dried fruits, nuts, sourdough starter, and more. Snatch a Multigrain Sandwich Loaf along with a bread kit as this weekend’s activity of re-enacting Bread Week of The Great British Baking Show in your kitchen.

Thorough Bread and Pastry’s hours are 8am to 3pm Fridays to Sundays with online ordering for pickup as an option.
